Whale & Dolphin Trust
About
Established in 1994, the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT) is a registered charity that has pioneered practical, locally-based education and monitoring programmes on cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) in the Hebrides.
HWDT is based in Tobermory, on the Hebridean Isle of Mull where we have our main, education and research offices and a Visitors Centre and Shop.
We conduct long-term monitoring of distribution, abundance and habitat use of the cetaceans in Hebridean waters. The aim of this monitoring work is to provide those who manage Scotland's marine wildlife and habitats with information they need to achieve effective conservation of the area's extraordinary biodiversity.
This monitoring work also provides the materials for our work in environmental education, helping to raise public awareness about the wildlife which exists in this unique region. The Trust believes that by educating people about the marine environment we are contributing to safeguard biodiversity now and for the future. We are educating the citizens and decision makers of tomorrow.
In these times of environmental and climate change the need for monitoring, education and conservation of our cetaceans on the west coast of Scotland has never been greater. As a small charity all support we receive from memberships, donations, sponsorship, volunteering and purchases at our shop really does make a difference, allowing us to continue our work. We hope you will get involved, read more about what we do and find out about HWDT’s research and education programmes.
