Benbecula is a hub for the Southern Isles, providing a stepping stone between North and South Uist
Benbecula is an island of the Outer Hebrides in the Atlantic Ocean, off the west coast of Scotland. The island like between the islands of North and South Uist to which it is connected by road causeways. Travel to any of the other main Hebridean islands or to the Scottish mainland must be done by air or sea.
The airport provides scheduled services to the mainland and other Hebridean islands. Your flight to Benbecula across the Sea of the Hebrides introduces you to the Celtic splendour of the Western Isles, or Outer Hebrides, nestling between North and South Uist.

History of Benbecula Airport
Benbecula airport can be found in the north-west corner of the island close to the village of Balivanich.
Benbecula airport has a long military history, and the airfield built during World War II became the control centre for the Hebrides rocket range, established during the Cold War, and is now Benbecula airport.
Aircraft first used the site at Benbecula in the 1930's and the RAF base was established there in 1942.
The original South Ford Bridge was built in 1942 to connect Benbecula's wartime RAF base to the steamer port at Lochboisdale in South Uist and was replaced by the current causeway in 1982.
An army base was established here in 1958 and is one of the main employers on the island. It is also the headquarters for those who service the South Uist missile testing range.
The airport was upgraded during 2001 and early 2002 in preparation for the Eurofighter Typhoon test programme.
