About
Welcome to Layers at Large, the website for Balvicar Farm Free Range Eggs
Balvicar Farm lies at the south end of the Isle of Seil, part of the Inner Hebrides. The islands most famous – and most useful – feature is the 230 year old arched stone bridge linking to the Scottish mainland: a bridge designed and constructed for horse and cart now incredibly carries double decker tour buses and 40 foot articulated lorries.
We are the third generation of our family to farm at Balvicar.
Traditional Values, Happy Hens
We only run free range hens unlike many other producers who principally run caged egg enterprises. Our hens are split into flocks of limited size and have continuous daylight access to the outside where they can range freely.
We are fortunate to have outlets for all our hens to retire to at the end of their working life thus avoiding the mass cull necessitated in most commercial operations.
