About
Sailing visitors to Tarbert, Loch Fyne, cannot fail to be impressed by the oustanding beauty of the harbour when they first enter East Loch Tarbert, although the natural elements are slowly being removed in favour of largely undesired insensitive development.
A natural amphitheatre surrounded by heather covered hills opens up before them opposite a new marina at Portavadie expanding options for visiting boats.
The village of Tarbert nestles cosily round the bay, over which the ruined castle of Robert The Bruce keeps a watchful eye and looks out to Loch Fyne.
The harbour itself is the focal point of the village and its most important asset, home to a small but productive fishing fleet and a harbour with facilities and berths available for passing and long term stays. The harbour itself for the inner part contains a traditional stone wall designed and built by Thomas Telford, supplemented by new walls, seating and pathway - although these are purely aesthetic.
Tarbert is an attractive village with many interesting features, many of these are listed in other sections of this web site, including festivals and other local events. You may wish to time a visit to coincide with these occasions.
For berths, vessels with a draft up to 3.5metres have both access to the fish quay and pontoons at all stages of the tide.
A toilet and shower facility is available (not free). Power and water points are strategically located along the north pontoon system. Group visits are welcome. Reserved berthing may be arranged by giving advance notice.
The harbour is managed by a group of individuals called trustees. Some are appointed by the public within the postcode to run the harbour in the democratic interests of the stakeholders and the public.
